Professor Ramon Rosselló-Móra delivers academic lecture at China CDC

On Nov 13, 2023, Professor Ramon Rosselló-Móra from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) visited the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) and delivered an academic lecture titled "Cultured and uncultured prokaryote classification and naming following the Bacteriological Code (ICNP) or the SeqCode, the example of Salinibacter", at the invitation of Xu Jianguo, director of State Key Laboratory of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control at the China CDC.

 

During the lecture, Professor Rosselló-Móra detailed the classification methods for prokaryotes and development of taxonomy from a microbiological perspective. He shared the difficulties encountered by his research team in the process of discovering and isolating new strains of halophilic bacteria in sodium-rich environments and the corresponding solutions, particularly emphasizing the cutting-edge technology of using metagenomic data to discover and name uncultured microorganisms.

 

After the lecture, participants engaged in a lively interactive exchange with Professor Rosselló-Móra on such topics as the discovery and classification of new bacterial species. 

 

This academic lecture helped enhance participants' understanding of the discovery of new bacterial species, especially new pathogens. Together with the reverse pathogenesis theory proposed by Xu Jianguo, who is also an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the event inspired and motivated researchers engaged in research projects related to public health and infectious disease pathogens, and provided important research methods and guidance for microbiology and health-related research and professional work.

 

The event is presided over by Shi Xiaoming, deputy general of China CDC. Over 100 researchers, frontline medical personnel, and graduate students from the headquarters of the China CDC, its affiliated units, and national key laboratories attended the event.
