China CDC holds kickoff meeting for university debate tournament on tobacco control

The kickoff meeting for an upcoming university debate tournament on tobacco control was held by the China CDC and the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control on Apr 22, 2022, on the occasion of the 35th World No Tobacco Day.
 
Themed "smoke-free culture, youth together", the event was aimed at promoting the implementation of tobacco control spelt out in the Healthy China Initiative(2019-2030), raising awareness of tobacco control among youth and building a healthier environment for their growth.
 
 
Xiao Lin, deputy director of the Tobacco Control Office of the China CDC, said that this event would scientifically guide young people to establish a good health concept, firmly establish the concept of "you are the first person responsible for your own health", and raise the awareness of the harm of tobacco among youth.
 
Xiao also expressed her hope that more and more youth could concern about tobacco control from this event. They can also join tobacco control volunteers to protect their own health and that of the people around them, taking on the social responsibility to form a "smoke-free" culture.
 
Liao Wenke, deputy president of the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control, announced the rules of the debate at the meeting.
 
Two venues have been set up for the tournament in Beijing and Xi'an, Shaanxi province. Students from 24 universities, including Peking University and Tsinghua University, will participate in the debate.
 
The event was guided by the Working Group on Tobacco Control Action of the Healthy China Initiative and the Department of Physical, Health and Arts Education of the Ministry of Education, and was supported by the WHO Representative Office in China.
