From 27 to 29 August 2025, the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (National Center for Tropical Diseases Research), held a training course on strengthening research capacity for parasitic disease control -via science and technology in Shanghai. Twenty-four young researchers from disease control institutions in 20 provinces and cities across the country took part in the three-day programme.

Focusing on the core goal of using research to empower disease control, the course invited experts from the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Naval Medical University and other institutions to give lectures. Researcher Zheng Bin from the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases gave a thematic presentation on research leading the development of disease control, laying a solid foundation for participants’ understanding of the role of research. Professor Cao Guangwen from Naval Medical University gave an in-depth lecture on cohort study design and sample size calculation, strengthening participants’ practical skills in study design. The curriculum also covered public health ethics, AI-supported infectious disease early warning and other key stages of the research process, helping trainees build a knowledge framework that connects theory with practice. The course adopted a flipped classroom model, with trainees working in groups on case-based group exercises. Based on what they had learned, they prepared project applications and presented them for discussion, while experts provided on site comments and guidance to reinforce learning through practice.

The training course served as an intensive opportunity to enhance research capacity and also established a platform for exchange and cooperation among young disease control researchers nationwide. Participants noted that the training had deepened their understanding of research integrity and academic standards and had improved their core skills in project application, scientific paper writing and data mining. The National Institute of Parasitic Diseases will continue to leverage its advantages as a national level institution to provide more high quality training opportunities for young professionals engaged in disease control work.
