2024 National Seminar on Innovation and Development in Academic Publishing for the Disease Control System Successfully Held

On July 26, 2024, the Office of Academic Publishing, China CDC, hosted the 2024 National Seminar on Innovation and Development in Academic Publishing for Disease Control in Shanghai. The opening ceremony was attended by Academician Shen Hongbing, Deputy Director of the National Administration of Disease Prevention and Control and Director of China CDC; Xiong Huang, First-Class Inspector of the General Office of the National Administration of Disease Prevention and Control; and Mao Jie, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Over 70 participants, including leaders and key personnel responsible for academic publishing from provincial-level CDCs, relevant affiliated units, and departments of China CDC, attended the seminar. Researcher Shi Xiaoming, Deputy Director of China CDC, presided over the event.
 
In his opening address, Academician Shen Hongbing emphasized that world-class academic journals directly reflect a nation's scientific and technological competitiveness and cultural influence, embodying cultural confidence, particularly in terms of innovation. He called for heightened ideological awareness, precise understanding of publishing direction, strong defense of the ideological front, and development of academic journals within the disease control system from individual publications to clusters and scales, creating a unique brand effect in the field. Shen urged participants to take advantage of the opportunity presented by high-quality development and reform in the disease control sector, fully utilizing industry strengths to advance academic publishing work. He highly praised the seminar's significance and expressed his hopes and specific instructions for the future high-quality development of academic publishing in the field.
 
Inspector Xiong Huang emphasized the responsibilities and mission of academic publishing during his speech. He highlighted the need to deeply understand Xi Jinping's cultural thought, maintain a firm political direction, lead scientific and technological innovation, and convey cultural confidence. Xiong stressed the importance of accurately grasping the developmental trajectory and requirements of academic publishing, recognizing its inherent political nature, and rigorously implementing policies for journal management. He called for efforts to elevate journal quality, support the publication of high-caliber content, and continuously enhance international communication and influence.
 
During the seminar, Bai Yue, Director of the Journal Management Department at the China Health Education Center, provided an overview of the national publishing management system and related work requirements. Zhao Chihong, Director of the Academic Publishing Management Office, presented findings from a survey of journals hosted by the China CDC and provincial-level CDCs. The seminar also featured experience-sharing sessions from the editors-in-chief of Disease Surveillance, Journal of Environmental & Occupational Medicine, and Chinese Journal of Public Health. Participants engaged in lively discussions and exchanges throughout the event.
 
This seminar marks the first national conference on academic publishing within the disease control system. It has strengthened connections among academic publishing teams across the country's disease control system, fostering collaboration and unity among industry professionals. Against the backdrop of historic opportunities brought by system reforms, the seminar aims to jointly advance the development and prosperity of academic publishing in the field.
