Queensland University of Technology Delegation Visits Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention

On June 19th, a delegation led by Professor Wenbiao Hu and Distinguished Professor Kerrie Lee Mengersen from Queensland University of Technology visited the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) to engage in a dialogue focused on infectious disease surveillance and early warning systems between Australia and China. The session was attended by Li Qun, Deputy Director of China CDC, Wang Liping, Deputy Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Liu Qiyong, Chief Expert of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Control and Prevention, Ding Xuhong from the Foreign Affairs Office, and other distinguished participants. Deputy Director Li Qun began by acknowledging the success of a joint training workshop on spatial epidemiology and infectious disease surveillance and early warning, held in Beijing from June 17th to 18th. He noted the solid foundation of cooperation between China CDC and Queensland University of Technology in the field of infectious disease surveillance and early warning, highlighting the broad prospects for future collaboration. Li emphasized the desire to further deepen this cooperation to leverage each institution's strengths in advancing research on infectious disease surveillance and early warning technologies. He also expressed the hope to enhance bilateral cooperation in capacity building for researchers, aiming to improve their professional expertise and expand their global perspective.
 
During the visit, extensive discussions covered various topics, including the operational scope of the China CDC, the current status of vector surveillance in China, the influence of social and environmental factors on COVID-19 transmission in Australia, and the epidemiological situation of Japanese encephalitis in Australia. Both sides proposed constructive suggestions for continued enhancement of collaboration in the field of infectious disease surveillance and early warning. They agreed on the importance of establishing a long-term and effective exchange platform to improve surveillance capabilities for diseases like influenza.
