China CDC and UNICEF Conduct Field Exchange on Child Road Safety Project in Gansu and Yunnan
Between February and April 2025, experts from the National Center for Chronic and Noncommunicable Disease Control and Prevention of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCNCD, China CDC), the UNICEF China Office, and the Road Traffic Safety Research Center of the Ministry of Public Security, along with project staff from provincial, municipal, and county-level offices in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Gansu, conducted a series of field exchanges as part of the Western China Child Road Safety Project. The visits were joined by leaders and representatives from local Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, education and sports bureaus, transport bureaus, and traffic police units at the provincial, city, and district/county levels.
The exchanges combined on-site observations and discussion sessions. The expert group visited project intervention schools and observed two types of model classes across four schools in the two provinces: the My Road to Safety map-based experiential learning class and a themed debate class on “Road Traffic Safety and Efficiency.” The educational intervention tools developed for the project received widespread recognition from participating schools. Following the classroom visits, the expert team held feedback meetings to hear progress reports from project offices at all levels and from the intervention schools. The team acknowledged the achievements made in improving traffic environments and implementing intervention measures. At the same time, they noted that safeguarding child road safety remains a long-term task. They called for further strengthening of multisectoral coordination, steady advancement of interventions in line with the project plan, and more effective efforts to raise awareness of road safety among children and their parents—so as to prevent and reduce road traffic injuries involving children.
