The first meeting of the BRICS Network of Public Health Institutions was convened online on April 15, 2025. The meeting was hosted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Brazil’s national public health institute and the rotating chair of BRICS for the year. Approximately 40 representatives attended from BRICS member countries—China, Russia, India, and South Africa—as well as from BRICS partner countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Delegates from the Office of International Cooperation and Office of Policy and Planning Research of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) participated in the meeting and gave speeches.

During the meeting, each country presented an overview of its national public health system, including structural features, organizational arrangements, priority policies, and major challenges, as well as potential areas for collaboration with other BRICS public health institutions. All participants expressed support for strengthening public health systems among BRICS countries through South-South cooperation. Discussions also focused on research related to public health systems, advancing future cooperation within the BRICS public health framework, and enhancing engagement in global health governance. At the meeting, the China CDC representatives actively proposed technical cooperation initiatives, offering valuable insights and potential solutions to the challenges discussed.
