China CDC (Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine) Holds Symposium Marking 40th Anniversary of Graduate Education

On December 25, 2024, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), also known as the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, held a symposium in Beijing to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its graduate education program. Academician Shen Hongbing, Deputy Director of the National Health Commission, Director of the National Administration of Disease Prevention and Control, and Director of China CDC, who also serves as Dean of the Graduate School, attended and delivered a speech. Other attendees included Shi Ying, Deputy Director-General (Acting Head) of the Department of Science, Technology, and International Cooperation at the National Administration of Disease Prevention and Control; leaders from the schools of public health at Peking University, Peking Union Medical College, and Nanjing Medical University; former Executive Deans of the Graduate School and heads of the Education Office at China CDC; heads of training units; members of the Degree Evaluation Committee; and over 70 participants, including faculty representatives. The symposium was chaired by Shi Xiaoming, Deputy Director of China CDC and Executive Dean of the Graduate School.
 
In his remarks, Director Shen praised the remarkable achievements and milestones of China CDC’s graduate education program over the past 40 years and extended his heartfelt gratitude to the educators who have contributed to its success. He emphasized the need to align graduate education with the demands of the new era, advocating for the fulfillment of the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education. He also highlighted the pivotal role of graduate education in the development of China CDC, calling for intrinsic growth, multiple strategies to ensure high-quality development, and a systems-thinking approach to integrate education, science, technology, and talent development. Additionally, he underscored the importance of strengthening practical collaboration with universities and institutions to advance medical-education integration.
 
The Graduate School presented a comprehensive report on the development and achievements of the graduate education program over the past four decades. Former Executive Deans of the Graduate School, heads of the Education Office, leaders from university public health schools, senior experts from China CDC, and faculty representatives delivered speeches. They shared their reflections and experiences in graduate education and provided constructive suggestions for further enhancing the quality and impact of the program.
 
In his concluding remarks, Deputy Director Shi Xiaoming emphasized the importance of seizing new opportunities in graduate education development. He stressed the need to enhance the end-to-end management of “admissions-training-employment” and to focus on cultivating high-caliber talent with a strong sense of national commitment, exceptional professional competence, and a practical, results-oriented mindset.
