National Institute for Radiological Protection, China CDC redesignated as WHO's collaborating center for radiation and health
As the first domestic collaborating center of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the field of radiation health, National Institute for Radiological Protection (NIRP), Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), recently passed various examinations from the WHO and was successfully redesignated for another term.
The current term of designation of NIRP was effective from April 23, 2023, with Professor Sun Quanfu and Professor Liu Qingjie serving as directors of the collaborating center.
During its first term, which expired in April, NIRP carried out lots of fruitful work within the established framework and earned great recognition from WHO’s technical officials despite the imfact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NIRP kicked off its redesignation earlier this year in a move to deepen its cooperation with WHO and to continuously promote the safe utilization of nuclear and radiation technology in China.
In its new term, NIRP will be committed to providing technical support to WHO in three aspects: strengthening preparedness and response to radiation emergencies, including biodosimetry, existing radiation exposures, such as the assessment of radon as well as radioactivities in foods and drinking water, and radiation protection in medical applications of ionizing radiation.
The successful redesignation will enable NIRP to continually take part in WHO's "Global Health" development strategy, support the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), promote the application of China's technology and experience in radiation protection and health, and bolster China's international influence in the field.
