The maternal and child nutrition and health cohort study in China (TAWS), a national project under the guidance of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), recently completed a follow-up survey of children in kindergartens in Wuqiang county, North China's Hebei province.

Regular physical examinations, body composition measurements and questionnaires were carried out in the survey.

The physical examination of 4,390 children was practiced by healthcare workers of Wuqiang county, guided and overseen by the staff of the national project team, and their body composition was measured by using an advanced bioelectrical impedance analysis instrument.

The project team also conducted a face-to-face interview on the diet and physical activities of the children in and out of kindergartens. Forty-eight kindergartens were surveyed and 1,984 preschoolers completed the questionnaire.

The project team fed back the report on physical examination to parents and kindergartens afterwards, and provided them with professional nutrition and health advice based on the children's diet and physical activities.

In 2016, the National Institute for Nutrition and Health of the China CDC established the maternal and infant nutrition and health cohort in Wuqiang in conjunction with the Hebei Provincial CDC and other institutions to follow the nutritional and health status of local mothers from the beginning of pregnancy and infants.
