Event Marking the 39th World No Tobacco Day Held in Shenzhen

On May 28, 2026, the event marking the 39th World No Tobacco Day was held in Shenzhen under the theme “Smoke-Free Youth, Boundless Future” Guo Yanhong, Member of the Leading Party Members’ Group and Vice Minister of the National Health Commission, Chen Liangxian, Member of the Leading Party Members’ Group of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Chen Qing, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Member of the Leading Party Members’ Group of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, and other officials and guests attended the event.

During the event, Martin, WHO Representative in China, presented the 2026 World No Tobacco Day Award to the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and to Lo Chung Mau, Secretary for Health of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He also presented a plaque to the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tobacco Control Monitoring and Evaluation, established upon application by the Tobacco Control Office of China CDC.

Zhang Guoxin, Secretary of the CPC Committee and Deputy Director-General of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, also known as the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, attended the event and presented the main results and findings of the 2025 China College Student Tobacco Survey. The survey showed that the current smoking prevalence among Chinese college students in 2025 was 7.3%, down 0.5 percentage points from 2021. The prevalence of current e-cigarette use among college students was 0.7%, down 1.8 percentage points from 2021.

Gu Dongfeng, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chair Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology, gave a presentation on the health hazards of tobacco. Yao Qiang, Deputy Director of the Zhejiang Provincial Health Commission and Director of the Zhejiang Provincial Disease Control and Prevention Administration, and Wu Hongyan, Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission, shared tobacco control experience from Zhejiang Province and Shenzhen respectively. Also released at the event were the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Joint Initiative, “Building a Smoke-Free Bay Area Together for a Healthy Future” and the Academicians’ Tobacco Control Science Communication Initiative, “Smoke-Free Youth, Boundless Future”
