Director Wang Jianwei Meets with Alain Mérieux, President of Fondation Mérieux

On the afternoon of May 7, 2026, Wang Jianwei, Director of the China CDC, met in Beijing with Alain Mérieux, President of Fondation Mérieux, and his wife. The two sides had in-depth exchanges on deepening China-France public health cooperation, talent development, and global cooperation in disease prevention and control.
Director Wang warmly welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Mérieux. He noted that cooperation between China CDC and Fondation Mérieux began in 2007 and has always been built on mutual respect and trust. It has become a model of health cooperation between China and France. Over the past nearly 20 years, the two sides have carried out productive cooperation in tuberculosis prevention and control, young talent development, and the response to emerging and sudden infectious diseases. China CDC has now developed a five-in-one functional framework covering disease prevention and control, health emergency response, scientific research, education and training, and global public health cooperation. The national 15th Five-Year Plan has further set out requirements for strengthening the overall capacity of China CDC, providing solid support and clear direction for deeper cooperation between the two sides. Director Wang expressed the hope that both sides would further deepen cooperation and contribute to building a global community of health for all.
Mr. Mérieux said that Fondation Mérieux has completed its operational integration and now has the cross-sector resources needed to put the One Health concept into practice. He reaffirmed that the Foundation will continue to follow its core principle of being “in China, for China, and growing together with China.” It will stay rooted in China’s public health sector and continue to deepen strategic cooperation with China CDC and other institutions. Through concrete action, the Foundation will support the development of China’s infectious disease prevention and control system and work with partners to safeguard public health security in China and around the world.
During the meeting, representatives from China CDC’s National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention, Center for Global Public Health, National Center for Tuberculosis Control and Prevention, and Office of International Cooperation introduced their current work and key priorities. They also put forward suggestions for future cooperation based on their respective functions. The two sides reached preliminary consensus on localized public health capacity building, research and development of diagnostic technologies, and giving priority to practical cooperation in China’s neighboring regions.
Liao Qizhi, Chief Representative of Fondation Mérieux in China, and others attended the meeting.
