China CDC Food Composition Monitoring Team Receives International “Success Story Award”
In September 2025, the Food Composition Monitoring Team of the National Institute for Nutrition and Health at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention received the 2025 Success Story Award from the FAO International Network of Food Data Systems (FAO INFOODS) for its project Building China’s National Food Composition Data Network in the New Era. The project offers a Chinese approach that can inform similar work in other countries.
As China’s food supply and dietary patterns continue to shift, updating national Food Composition Data has become a key step in assessing the population’s nutritional status and exploring its links with chronic diseases. Since 2010, with support from the National Health Commission, the project team has built a monitoring network covering all 31 provinces, strengthened laboratory capacity and completed composition assessments for both region specific foods and major commonly consumed foods.
Today, this database network is widely used in nutrition surveys, healthy food development and nutrition education. It supports accurate calculation of nutrient intake, helps enterprises design more targeted food products, and contributes to public awareness of nutrition. It has also promoted the development of tools for personalized dietary assessment.
Based on the review of an international expert panel, INFOODS acknowledged the contribution made by the Chinese Food Composition Monitoring Team. The project leader noted that the team will continue to improve the data network, deepen international cooperation and support efforts to advance nutrition and health for the whole population.
