To review research on technologies for the prevention and control of major infectious diseases in key regions of Africa, a five-member delegation led by Qi Xiaopeng, Director of the Global Public Health Center of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), visited Ethiopia from 14 to 20 September 2025. The delegation carried out exchanges and field visits at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute (BETIn), the Ethiopia office of the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), and St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College.

During the visit, the delegation held in-depth discussions with EPHI, AHRI and other national institutions in Ethiopia on the distribution of major infectious diseases in Africa and in priority areas of Ethiopia, as well as on integrated prevention and control technologies. They discussed technical approaches for HIV, hepatitis and malaria testing and control, and shared practical cases and cooperation experience in these fields. The team also gained a clearer picture of each institution’s research capacity, laboratory capability, ability to undertake research projects and willingness to collaborate, laying the groundwork for future China-Africa research projects on major infectious disease prevention and control in Ethiopia.

The delegation also met with experts from Africa CDC for detailed technical discussions on infectious disease surveillance systems, HIV laboratory networks and malaria diagnostic capacity, with a particular focus on laboratory capacity building at Africa CDC and its effective operation.

The visit helped identify areas for future cooperation between China and Ethiopia in research on major infectious disease prevention and control technologies. China CDC will continue to work with EPHI, AHRI and Africa CDC to promote the implementation of major infectious disease prevention and control technology projects in key regions of Africa.
