On September 20, 2024, the new Editorial Board of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences (BES) convened for a full meeting in Beijing. Academician Shen Hongbing, Deputy Director of the National Administration of Disease Control and Prevention, Director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), and BES Advisor; Academician Gu Dongfeng, Vice President of Southern University of Science and Technology and BES Advisor; and Shi Xiaoming, Deputy Director of China CDC and Editor-in-Chief of BES, attended the meeting. Over 60 invited experts and professors serving as editorial board members participated in person, with 12 members joining via online conferencing.

During the meeting, Deputy Director Shen Hongbing presented appointment letters to the newly appointed Editor-in-Chief Shi Xiaoming and the attending Deputy Editors. In subsequent remarks, Deputy Director Shen commended BES's past achievements and expressed high expectations for the journal's future development. The Deputy Director encouraged BES to leverage the expanding opportunities within global public health, focus on its core disciplines, and develop unique thematic content to drive further growth. As a journal supervised by the National Administration of Disease Control and Prevention and published by China CDC, BES must maintain a high level of political alignment, adhere to appropriate publishing standards, and safeguard its ideological stance. Key priorities include: setting clear development goals, creating comprehensive growth plans, and focusing on emerging disciplines; fully utilizing the board's role in promoting academic content and fostering interactive exchanges to support the journal's healthy development; enhancing academic influence and dissemination by expanding collaborations and employing new media and technology for focused outreach; and emphasizing talent development by optimizing team structure, building a strong platform for professional growth, and inspiring a motivated workforce.

Academician Gu Dongfeng delivered an academic report titled "Empowering the Prevention and Control of Cardiovascular and Other Chronic Diseases through Technological Innovation." Based on China's long-term demographic trends in aging, Academician Gu outlined future research directions in five key areas: the use of big data and genomics to aid disease prediction; early screening and rapid diagnosis through imaging technology; detection capabilities enabled by artificial intelligence and wearable devices; biotechnology-driven drug development; and the application of rehabilitation robotics. The presentation emphasized the need for close collaboration to drive innovation and translate research into actionable results, developing prevention and control solutions tailored to China's specific needs, addressing the evolving health expectations of the public, and contributing to the Healthy China Initiative goals.

Editor-in-Chief Shi Xiaoming noted that BES has consistently focused on examining the effects of biological, nutritional, ecological, and physicochemical factors on public health. With a strong foundation of editorial experience and academic resources, and with the recent integration of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine under China CDC, BES is positioned at a new starting point. The journal aims to establish itself as a globally leading journal in public health, entering a new phase of development.

Deputy Editor-in-Chief Zhang Qun presented data analytics on the journal's recent publishing and dissemination performance, expressing gratitude for the high-impact contributions from editorial board members. Board members engaged in discussions on several key topics, including content planning for public health, infectious diseases, and chronic disease management; strategies for the new editorial board to support the journal's high-quality development; and measures to strengthen BES's influence in both domestic and international circles.

BES remains steadfast in its mission of prioritizing public health as its guiding principle. The journal will continue to closely monitor developments and trends in key research areas, supporting the high-level advancement of public health and contributing to the ambitious goals of "Healthy China, Beautiful China."
