Dr. Jérôme Salomon, Assistant Director-General of WHO, Visits China CDC

On July 10, 2024, Dr. Jérôme Salomon, Assistant Director-General for Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases at the World Health Organization (WHO), led a delegation to visit the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC). The visit focused on discussions concerning the prevention and control of tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and malaria. The meeting was attended by China CDC Director General, Prof. Shen Hongbing, and Deputy Director Dr. Yan Jun. Prof. Shen warmly welcomed Dr. Salomon and his delegation. He highlighted that China CDC actively engages in technical cooperation with WHO through various channels, including WHO Collaborating Centers, reference laboratories, multidisciplinary expert advisory committees, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, and personnel secondments. Prof. Shen emphasized that amidst the numerous challenges facing global health today, China CDC is committed to further deepening technical cooperation and partnerships with WHO. Dr. Salomon's visit is expected to elevate the collaboration between the two organizations to new heights.
 
Dr. Salomon expressed his sincere gratitude for the warm reception by China CDC and their longstanding support for WHO's work. He acknowledged the significant progress China has made in the control and prevention of tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, malaria, and other neglected tropical diseases, as well as noncommunicable diseases. He praised China's positive role as a model at both regional and global levels. Dr. Salomon expressed his hope that both sides would deepen their technical cooperation, demonstrating leadership in the global health arena, and contributing to the Healthy China 2030 Initiative and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
 
Experts from both sides engaged in enthusiastic discussions on key topics. Following the meeting, Dr. Yan Jun accompanied Dr. Salomon and his delegation on a tour of the Tuberculosis Control Center, the WHO Collaborating Center for Vector Surveillance and Management, and the HIV/AIDS Prevention Center. In the afternoon, Dr. Salomon also held separate meetings with expert teams from the Noncommunicable Disease Center and the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases.
