The First China Conference on Obesity Prevention and Control Held in Wuhan

On May 12, 2024, the First Conference on China Obesity Prevention and Control , organized by the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), was successfully held in Wuhan, Hubei Province. The conference was hosted by the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association’s Committee on Healthy Lifestyles and Community Health and the Chronic Disease Center of the China CDC, and co-hosted by the Hubei Provincial Preventive Medicine Association, Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the Hubei Provincial CDC.
 
Liu Dongru, Deputy Director of the Hubei Provincial Health Commission and Party Member, Li Guanglin, Deputy Secretary-General of the CPMA, and Wu Jing, Director of the National Center for Chronic and Noncommunicable Disease Control and Prevention (NCNCD), China CDC, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was chaired by Wang Limin, Chair of the Committee on Healthy Lifestyles and Community Health of the CPMA and Deputy Director of the NCNCD, China CDC. More than 300 experts and scholars from CDCs at various levels, medical and health institutions, research institutes, and universities across the country attended the conference in person, while over 12,000 health promotion professionals participated online.

The theme of the conference was "Prevent Obesity, Promote High-Quality Development of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control." The conference invited several keynote speakers, including Academician Wu Tangchun from Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Academician Jia Weiping from the Sixth People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University (online), Dr. Chang Suying from UNICEF, and Professor Wang Youfa from the Global Health Institute at Xi’an Jiaotong University. Their keynote presentations covered topics such as protecting human health for a better life, characteristics and treatment strategies of obesity in the Chinese population, creating a healthy food environment for children, interpreting the 2024 World Obesity Report, and recommendations for future obesity prevention and control efforts in China.

Following the keynote speeches, Wang Limin, Deputy Director of the NCNCD provided an interpretation of the newly issued Chinese Preventive Medicine Association Group Standard "Basic Data Set Standards for Chronic Disease Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance in Adults.". Zhang Mei, Deputy Director of the Divsion of Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance of the NCNCD introduced the forthcoming publication, "Health Management Guide for Preventing Chronic Diseases in Children." The event concluded with the launch ceremony of the first "Healthy Voice • New Science Popularization Talent" National Competition for Health Lifestyle Science Popularization and Science Exhibitions.

In the breakout sessions, experts from various fields, including endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, and rehabilitation, engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions on topics such as healthy lifestyles and obesity prevention, prevention and treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases, and prevention of scoliosis and obesity in children. In the "Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention" sub-forum, experts from the China CDC, Qinghai University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Hubei CDC delivered insightful reports on topics including the fifteen-year keywords of healthy lifestyle actions, dietary guidelines for obesity, and nutrition and obesity control.
