On Nov 14, 2023, Dr. Wang Huanyu, director of the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention (IVDC) of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), led a team to Urumqi, capital of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, to provide assistance in local viral disease prevention.

This five-day assistance featured on-site lectures and technical guidance on the strengthening of testing capabilities and discussions on the prevention and control of arbovirus diseases in Xinjiang.

The training experts delivered guidance to local professional technical staff through theoretical lectures, hands-on training, and simulated experiments on cellular culture, serological testing, and virus isolation and cultivation.

Additionally, the expert team conducted discussions with leaders and staff from relevant departments, including the Pathogenic Biology Detection Institute, the Disinfection and Infection Control Center, the Acute Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Institute, and the Immunization Planning Institute of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region CDC, regarding the future construction of the key laboratory for vector-borne organisms and the inclusion of Janpanese encephalitis vaccine in the immunization program in Xinjiang.

The experts stated that the IVDC will provide more comprehensive assistance to Xinjiang in terms of laboratory testing techniques, experimental materials, and personnel training.

This assistance project not only further strengthened the region's capacity for isolating, cultivating, and detecting arbovirus, but also explores new ideas for cooperation with Xinjiang's Key Laboratory for vector-borne diseases.
