The 2023 China Health Science Popularization Innovation Competition kicked off on May 5, gathering more than 120 health educators across the country at a launch meeting in Nanjing, capital city of East China's Jiangsu province.

During the event, Xiong Huang, first-level inspector of the National Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention (NBDC), pointed out in his speech that science popularization is a "social vaccine" for disease prevention and is key to reducing the likelihood of people falling ill.

He said that the leading Party group of the NBDC attaches great importance to the popularization of and education on disease control science.

In recent years, health educators in the national disease control system have created and disseminated many works of popular science, playing an important role in providing evidence-based information to the public.

More efforts are called on to further build consensus, adopt innovative practices, make joint contributions and provide shared benefits, in a bid to carry out in-depth publicity on disease control science and to advance the development of a healthier China, he added.

Zhou Yuhui, deputy secretary of the CPC China CDC Committee, noted that the competition has been held for seven consecutive years and that this year's event, featuring disease control, is set to deepen health science popularization by strengthening training and multi-party cooperation.

Disease control departments at all levels value the event and work together for good results, Zhou said.

For the competition, participants are expected to display works that are both professional and easily accessible and understandable to the general public, focusing on the prevention and control of acute infectious diseases and the main factors affecting health.

The launch meeting also reviewed the 2021 China Health Science Popularization Competition. The CDCs of Guangdong, Hubei, Jiangsu, Hunan, and Anhui provinces won excellent organization awards, with the Beijing CDC receiving the best contribution award.

Ten institutions, including the CDC of Henan province, were commended as last year's most influential WeChat account holders in the national disease control system.

Meanwhile, award-winning institutions held health science training workshops on science popularization capacity building, brand building, and risk prevention.

The event was sponsored by the China CDC, the Chinese Center of Health Education, Peking Union Medical College, the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, and the China Association of Health Promotion and Education, under the guidance of the NBDC.
