China CDC co-organizes 6th Symposium on Surveillance-Response Systems Leading to Tropical Diseases Elimination

The Sixth Symposium on Surveillance-Response Systems Leading to Tropical Diseases Elimination, co-sponsored by the National Institute of Parasitic Disease (NIPD) of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) (the Chinese Center for Tropical Disease Research), the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and the World Health Organization (WHO), was held between June 14 and 15, 2022. 
 
Under the theme of "Mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and sustain the goals of the NTD roadmap", the symposium attracted more than 600 scholars and experts from 53 countries.

Dr. Zhou Xiaonong, director of NIPD at China CDC moderated the opening ceremony. Prof. George F. Gao, director-general of the China CDC, Prof. Jürg Utzinger, director of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Dr. Andrea Bosman, director of the WHO’s Global Malaria Program, Dr. Gauden Galea, Representative of WHO China country office, and Dr. Lei Zhenglong, Deputy Director General of the Disease Control and Prevention Bureau of Chinese National Health Commission attended the opening ceremony and delivered remarks.
 
Prof. Gao welcomed the global guests and experts. He emphasized the importance of "One world, One health" concept and proposed working together to fight against tropical diseases, including currently unknown ones.
 
At the symposium, experts from the WHO headquarter and Africa Regional Office, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Brazil, China, Papua New Guinea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe and other countries gave reports on the situational responses and strategies to fight against global malaria and neglected tropical diseases, the situations and challenges of tropical disease control and elimination at the national level, China-Africa cooperation practice in tropical disease control, and innovative technologies for One Health approach and tropical disease prevention and control.
 
In panel discussion, experts shared the strategies and development of tropical disease control and elimination and discussed the role of the One Heath approach in tropical disease surveillance and response at the symposium, which is expected to deepen international cooperation and help to achieve the goal of tropical disease elimination.
The symposium is part of a series of academic events and activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the China CDC.
