National Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day was established with the approval of the State Council of the People's Republic of China in 2019 and is observed each year on May 12.

On one hand, the establishment of the day meets the needs of the whole society for disaster prevention and mitigation; on the other hand, it reminds people of the past lessons and urges them to attach more importance to disaster prevention and mitigation and try to reduce losses.

The logo is composed of a rainbow, an umbrella and human beings. The rainbow after rain means beauty, future and hope. The umbrella represents protection and care. The two people represent a man and a woman, a senior and a youngster. Their hands held together and their legs form the Chinese character 众 (Zhong or public), implying that we should work together to achieve disaster prevention and mitigation.

The theme of National Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day in 2022 is to "reduce disaster risk, protect our home", and the publicity week runs from May 7 to 13.
