The National Institute for Occupational Health and Poison Control (NIOHP) was established in 1954. It was the first research institute for the study and prevention of occupational diseases and occupational health founded by the Chinese government. In 1983, the NIPOHP was affiliated to the Chinese Center for Preventive Medicine, which was renamed the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine in 1985 and became the predecessor of the China CDC.

The institute is a well-known national center for occupational health and occupational disease control and prevention and a center for toxicity test of chemicals affiliated with the then Ministry of Public Health. The institute is also a national base for the treatment and cure of chemical poisoning and a WHO collaborating center for occupational health.

The institute is authorized to confer master and PhD degrees in the fields of occupational and environmental health, and toxicology, and also authorized as a post-doctoral research station.
