China CDC Attends the First Meeting of the Conference of the BRICS National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs)
On the evening of April 29, 2025 (Beijing time), the First Meeting of the Conference of the BRICS National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) —one of the key events in the BRICS public health agenda for 2025—was held virtually. The meeting was hosted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation of Brazil, the 2025 BRICS rotating presidency. Over 40 representatives from BRICS member and partner countries participated in the event. The experts from China CDC, the NPHI of China, attended the meeting and gave a report.
The meeting focused on enhancing South-South cooperation among BRICS NPHIs, integrating regional public health resources, and strengthening public health capacity across member countries. Key agenda items included scientific and technological collaboration, exploration of priority areas for joint initiatives, and the establishment of knowledge-sharing platforms. NPHI representatives shared insights on institutional mandates, international cooperation practices, priority areas for future collaboration, and key challenges. Dr. Duncan Selbie, President of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), who was invited for complementary remarks, affirmed the significant role that BRICS countries play in global health governance and called for closer collaboration to address common public health challenges. The representative of China CDC presented proposals on international cooperation, shared China’s experiences, and contributed ideas to support the building of a global community of health for all.
The second in-person meeting is scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in September 2025 to further advance practical cooperation in public health among BRICS countries.
