Academic Exchange Meeting on China’s Vector Control for Malaria Elimination Held in Beijing
On April 23, 2025, ahead of World Malaria Day and China’s National Malaria Day, the Academic Exchange Meeting on China’s Vector Control for Malaria Elimination was successfully held in Beijing. The event was co-hosted by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) and the National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Tracking and Forecasting for Infectious Diseases. The seminar aimed to share China’s experience in malaria prevention and control and to strengthen global cooperation on malaria elimination. More than 80 participants from over 20 institutions joined the seminar in person and online, including representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Gates Foundation, The BMJ (British Medical Journal), the Ministries of Health of Sierra Leone and Kenya, the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, Peking University, and China CDC.
The seminar was chaired by Dr. Kan Biao, Director of the National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In his opening address, Li Qun, Deputy Director of China CDC, emphasized the importance of China's innovative strategies, technologies, and sustained efforts in both the elimination of malaria and post-elimination control, and highlighted the global significance of sharing the latest research findings. Dr. Rajpal Yadav, representing WHO, introduced the theme for World Malaria Day 2025 and commended China’s achievements in malaria vector control. Dr. Gong Wenfeng, Deputy Director of the Beijing Representative Office of the Gates Foundation, delivered a keynote speech titled “Building the bridge of international collaboration jointly, bridging the success to malaria eradication globally.”
Dr. Jocalyn Clark, International Editor at The BMJ, provided an overview of the special collection “China’s Malaria Control Lessons”. This collection features five articles summarized by Liu Qiyong, Chief Expert in Vector-Borne Disease Control, together with leading Chinese and international research teams. The articles present successful experiences and insights into malaria control and were published collectively in The BMJ
The seminar also featured an expert panel discussion involving prominent scholars from both China and abroad. Participants unanimously agreed that China’s innovative practices and proven results in vector control represent an applicable, replicable, and scalable model—often referred to as the “China model”—which highlights China’s continued contribution to global malaria elimination efforts
