Director Wang Jianwei Leads Delegation to Hong Kong and Macao, Opening a New Chapter in Public Health Cooperation
From 19 to 22 November 2025, Wang Jianwei, Director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), led a delegation to Macao and Hong Kong. During the visit, the delegation signed memorandums of cooperation with health authorities and universities in both places and held discussions on future collaboration.
On 19 November, Director Wang and Lo Iek Long, Director of the Health Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region, signed an institutional memorandum of cooperation. The two sides will focus on strengthening collaboration in infectious disease surveillance and early warning, emergency response to public health incidents, professional training and joint scientific research. These efforts aim to enhance the capacity of Macao’s public health system to respond to cross border epidemics, promote comprehensive prevention and control of chronic diseases, and provide technical support for achieving the goals set out in the Macao Health Blueprint.

On 20 and 21 November, Director Wang signed memorandums of cooperation with Professor Wong Yung shan, Dean of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Professor Lau Chak sing, Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong. The agreements set out plans to deepen cooperation in joint research, the training of public health professionals and global health practice. Drawing on the academic strengths of the universities and the field experience of disease control agencies in the mainland, the two sides will work together to build a public health research collaboration mechanism in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area and to promote better integration of regional public health resources.

In the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Director Wang led the delegation to visit the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority. He held discussions with Lam Man kin, Director of Health, and Xu Lok kin, Controller of the Centre for Health Protection, and their teams. The delegation was briefed in detail on Hong Kong’s experience in infectious disease surveillance and control, emergency response to public health incidents, field epidemiology training, surveillance and control of antimicrobial resistance, and the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases. The two sides reached a number of common understandings on topics such as establishing mechanisms for information sharing and consultation, expanding the application of artificial intelligence and big data, and deepening cooperation on chronic disease prevention and healthy ageing.

The delegation also held meetings with the Jockey Club Institute of Philanthropy and the Sharing Foundation to review the progress of public welfare cooperation projects and explore future areas for collaboration.
This visit further strengthened collaboration between China CDC and its partner institutions in Hong Kong and Macao in the field of public health. Going forward, the parties will draw on complementary strengths and integrate resources more effectively to enhance the capacity of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area to respond to major public health events. They will take practical steps to advance the Healthy China 2030 strategy and inject new momentum into integrated public health development in the Greater Bay Area. Officials from the Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, the Center for Global Public Health, the Public Health Emergency Center, and the Division of Epidemiology of China CDC accompanied the visit.
