National Institute for Occupational Health and Poison Control

The National Institute for Occupational Health and Poison Control (NIOHP) was established in 1954. It was the first research institute for study and prevention of occupational diseases and occupational health founded by the Chinese government. In 1983, the NIPOHP was affiliated to the Chinese Center for Preventive Medicine, which was renamed the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine in 1985 and became the predecessor of the China CDC. 
 
Over the years, the institute has conducted a series of research projects, including key national ones, related to occupational disease prevention. It has made great achievements in the field of prevention and treatment of pneumoconiosis, control of chemical poison, pesticide poisoning prevention, industrial toxicology, surveillance of workers’ health, diagnostic standards for occupational diseases and occupational health.
 
What we do
 
1. Carry out work on occupational health and poisoning control, and provide technical support for the formulation of laws, regulations, policies, plans, standards, supervision and inspection related to occupational disease prevention and poisoning control;
 
2. Undertake employers’ occupational-disease-inductive project declarations, monitor, report on and conduct risk assessment of occupational-disease-inductive factors, occupational diseases and acute poisoning, study and formulate intervention strategies and measures, and carry out health education and health promotion in the workplace;
 
3. Undertake the management of national-level chemical poisoning treatment bases and teams, and provide technical support for the emergency treatment of major occupational health hazards and outbreaks of poisoning;
 
4. Carry out work on chemical toxicity identification and on quality control of occupational health and poisoning testing laboratories;
 
5. Carry out scientific research on occupational health and poison control, 
 
6. Provide technical guidance for China’s occupational disease prevention and control organizations;
 
7. Carry out postgraduate education, continuing education and training on occupational health and poison control;
 
8. Conduct international exchanges and cooperation related to occupational health and poisoning control;
 
9. Accomplish other tasks entrusted by the China CDC.
