As a national-level institution specialized in environment and health, the National Institute of Environmental Health (NIEH) serves as a center for operational and technical guidance, focusing on disease control, emergency response, scientific research and education. The NIEH is dedicated to the prevention and control of environmental pollution-related diseases, population health promotion, carrying out investigation, surveillance and scientific research on population exposure, health effects and health impacts of environmental risk factors, as well as disinfection and infection prevention. It also plays a significant role in providing scientific and technical support for the enactment of laws, regulations, policies, standards, specifications and plans concerning environmental health as well as disinfection and infection control in China.
 
What we do:
 
1. Carry out environmental health work, and provide technical support and suggestions for the enactments of environmental health-related laws, regulations, policies, plans and programs;
 
2. Organize the formulation of the national environmental health-related technical plans, guidelines and specifications, formulate and revise relevant standards, and carry out work on the dissemination of environmental health knowledge, health education, and health promotion;
 
3. Carry out surveillance, investigation and scientific research on environmental health, propose protection strategies, measures and suggestions, and construct and manage environmental health databases and their application;
 
4. Participate in and supervise the health emergency responses and natural disaster assessment, emerging environmental pollution, and severe epidemics, and evaluate new products on drinking water and disinfection;
 
5. Carry out scientific research, technology research and development, and promotion of environmental health, disinfection and infection control;
 
6. Provide environmental health-related education, training and technical guidance for local CDCs;
 
7. Carry out international cooperation and exchanges on environmental health and participate in relevant international aid tasks;
 
8. Accomplish other tasks entrusted by the China CDC.
