The National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention (NIVDC) is an independent legal entity under the China CDC. It is the only national viral disease prevention and control and medical virology research institute in China. Through forward-looking design and scientific research, the NIVDC has laid a strong scientific and technological foundation. It has built the largest high-level biosafety laboratories in China, formed a sound disease control emergency response and scientific research system, and completed response and prevention and control tasks during infectious disease outbreaks. Throughout the years, six members of the NIVDC have become academicians, four of whom at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and two at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

In addition to the Prion Detection Center and the Chinese Center for Culture Collection of Microorganisms (Medical Virus), the NIVDC now has five WHO Collaboration Centers/Laboratories for Virus Reference and Research, namely the WHO Influenza Collaboration Reference Center, the WHO Western-Pacific Region (WPR) Polio Reference Laboratory, the WHO WPR Measles and Rubella Reference Laboratory, the WHO WPR Japanese Encephalitis Reference Laboratory and the WHO WPR Rotavirus Reference Laboratory.
